When you share your experience with other people, you might often find yourself saying things like, “I always knew I was destined for this job,” or “it is destiny that led me to you.”
But what does that even mean? Are we all just puppets on a string hurling toward an already established outcome, or do we have the power to take control of our lives and alter our destinies?
Our destinies are very much malleable. We have the power and opportunity to determine its shape through our choices and actions. Each decision we make opens doors for new possibilities while closing other doors, thereby altering the course of our lives.
So, how can you become the architect of your own destiny?
How to Create Your Own Destiny
- Believe you can create your own destiny
Why is it important to start by believing that you are the architect of your own destiny? Because your beliefs shape your behaviors. So, if you firmly believe that your destiny is set in stone or that your story has been written already, then why would you even bother doing anything to change it? You are more likely to live your life on autopilot while waiting for the eventuality of your destiny.
But if you chose to believe that you are the architect of your own destiny; and you have the power to alter your destiny through your decisions and actions, then that’s exactly what’s going to happen. You will begin to take responsibility for your own life. Yes! There are lots of things that are out of your control. It’s not your fault that your father was condemned to a life sentence when you were a child, or that you were born in a poor family. But how you respond to those circumstances is your responsibility, and it will eventually affect the course of your life and your destiny.
- Evaluate your current life and visualize your ideal future
Take some quiet time on your own to evaluate your life. Think about the current goals you are working toward (e.g., getting your dream job, learning a new skill, and having another child). Ask yourself this question: Is this what you really want to do? Do you feel pressured to pursue those goals? Have you been on autopilot?
Now, create a mental picture of your ideal future. Visualize what you wish down to the smallest detail. Do you want to switch jobs? Would you want to remain in the same industry, or do you want something completely different? Do you want to work remotely, or do you want to start your own business? Imagine a 24-hour period and play that movie in your mind as vividly as possible.
- Make a plan
This is just like a major project that starts with an idea or vision. That part has already been covered, now it’s time for the architect to turn the vision into a plan. This is where the mental picture is materialized while actively working to overcome potential setbacks and challenges. This will take a lot of hard work and effort, but it will be worth it.
Design a step-by-step plan that will take you from where you are now to your ideal future. Yes, there will be unforeseeable forces you won’t be able to account for in your plan. But as mentioned earlier, the important thing is that you know it is your responsibility to respond. You can always edit your plan accordingly.
- Take action
Get all the tools you need to build your life and take action. Start building your destiny block by block. Eliminate the excuses that might prevent you from executing your plan. There is never going to be a perfect moment to start because there is always going to be something going on in your life. So, start now!
Becoming the architect of your destiny ultimately means gearing your choices and actions towards the desired outcome. Take control of your life now. We will be waiting for you to share your experience.
